Marvel at one of the most iconic architectural temples heritage sites in the world, La Sagrada Família
When visiting the Catalan capital of Barcelona it is essential to visit the most famous works of Antoni Gaudi, La Sagrada Família – an exceptional temple that was designed by the Spanish architect Gaudi in 1882. Its official name is The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família – (Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family and this historical site is situated in the centre of Barcelona. Still under construction, since the build started in 1882, Gaudi overtook the initial head architect Francisco on the project. Transforming its engineering and architectural style utilising a mixture of Gothic and shapely art nouveau forms, Gaudi worked tirelessly on the temple until his last days.
Its progression has halted and recommenced many times for over a hundred years with completion still some years away although it has now entered its final phase of construction. The towers of the temple dominate the city skyline and have become a symbol of the city.

Uncover the history of La Sagrada Família Barcelona
The present design is based on reconstructed amendments to the plans that were destroyed in a fire as well as on modern adaptations. A group of architects have been continuing the work since 1940 with construction now entering its final phase. Unfortunately, civil conflict and war destroyed unfinished parts of the basilica and Gaudí's models and workshop. With construction progressing slowly and relying on private donations, eight out of the eighteen towers have already been completed. It’s an extraordinary piece of art with rich history and symbolism.
Gaudí's original design calls for a total of eighteen spires, representing in ascending order of height the Twelve Apostles, the Virgin Mary, the four Evangelists and, tallest of all, Jesus Christ. Upon completion of these spires, Sagrada Família will officially be the tallest church building in the world.
There are many tour options to consider from the audio which explains Gaudi’s thinking in designing the structure to simple interior non-guided tickets. It can be very busy especially in the summer months so it would be wise to pre-book tickets in advance if you find yourself needing to wait for your tour, there are plenty of nearby cafés and refreshment stalls to buy a quick snack or drink.
The interior causes many to be mesmerised by the carved decoration which includes words from the liturgy, colourful stained glass windows and tree-like pillars ascending up to the ceiling. The building's distinctive silhouette has gracefully become symbolic of Barcelona itself, attracting an estimated 2.5 million visitors annually. La Sagrada Família Barcelona, coupled with six other Gaudí buildings in Barcelona is an official UNESCO World Heritage Site, accrediting the brave development of architecture and building technology.
The main structure of the church and its towers are projected to be completed by 2026 with decorative features expected to be finished by 2032 with each passing year utilising the annual construction budget of €25 million.
