On the Altstadt (Old Town) side, check out the Rathaus - Hamburg's impressive Town Hall - and head south to the Speicherstadt warehouse district and shop the UNESCO World Heritage site's boutique shopping and galleries.

LOTS OF LAKES

Hamburg's abundance of lakes and waterways make for some spectacular scenery and urban wandering, and much of Hamburg's daily life revolves around the inner and outer Alster Lakes. The city's ferries are one of the easiest and most convenient ways to get on the water - the HVV public transport ticket works for all ferries as well. ST. PAULI AND SURROUNDS

Close to your apartment in Hamburg in Neustadt you'll find the St Pauli Landungsbrücken (St Pauli Piers). One of the best things to see and do in Hamburg, the piers are a hub for harbourside life, dining and entertainment. Many ferries leave from the piers daily, and the site is also the best place to start when exploring notable nearby attractions including the old Elbe tunnel and two museum ships, the Rickmer Rickmers and the Cap San Diego.

The nearby Hamburg Fischmarkt is not only one of Hamburg's top attractions but also the place locals go to buy their fish, fruit and catch up with friends. The Sunday morning crowd is a mix of early risers and those that decided to skip sleep altogether. It's just as acceptable to chow down on a local fish sandwich with a coffee as it is to enjoy a beer or three. Reeperbahn is awash with restaurants, bars, clubs and some more colourful additions. St. Pauli doesn't really come alive until midnight, but it's easy to start 'early' at bars like Glanz & Gloria or Christiansen's Fine Drinks & Cocktails on Pinnasberg. Getting to St Pauli from your Hamburg hotel is easy - take the U-Bahn from Rödingsmarkt to Landungsbrücken then transfer to Reeperbahn on the S1 S-Bahn line.
