A CELEBRATION OF ISLAMIC ART

ART IN THE DESERT

True to Qatar's aim of being the Middle East's cultural capital, art can be found in the most unusual places. In the middle of the country's western desert, about an hour's drive from your apartment hotel stands renowned American artist Richard Serra's epic masterpiece, "East-West/West-East". The sculpture consists of a series of four massive steel plates that were crafted in Germany, then wheeled into the desert to be craned into place. The piece adds to the mystery and magic of the arid Qatari desert. Over time, the elements will work their own magic on the pillars, changing the relationship between the artwork and the landscape that surrounds it.
