There’s something special about following your curiosity wherever it wants to go. City to city, you’re not just collecting stamps in your passport, but chasing stories, making memories, and letting a little wander in. Even in Singapore, locals love playing tourists sometimes. Ever wondered what the staff at Capri by Fraser, China Square do during their days off, or where they would recommend guests to visit? We have asked a few of them, and here are some of the insider tips!
When asked, Steven recommends Pulau Ubin. A 15-minute bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal, you’ll feel like you’ve slipped into a forgotten chapter. Pulau Ubin is old-school Singapore. Gravel paths instead of modern highways, with heritage that’s very much alive, and maybe a few curious monkeys eyeing your snacks. “Don’t you try to feed those monkeys, trust me,” he warns with a smirk, like someone who learned the hard way.
Stilted wooden houses, creaky bicycles, and roosters sounding off at first light. It’s that whole vibe makes it a must-go. Steven would rent a bicycle to explore the island’s stories. A ride through those Kampong lanes, listen out for old tales, and treat himself to some local nosh. It’s like borrowing a day from the ’60s, where everyone knew his name and nature was his playground. “Pulau Ubin doesn’t need you to do much. Just show up with an open mind and maybe a dash of childlike wonder,” he shares.
When the day winds down, take the bumboat back and follow the scent of good food to Changi Village Hawker Centre, where Steven’s favourites like Nasi Lemak and Sambal Stingray taste best after a day in the sun. Not forgetting to pair the meal with a refreshing cup of iced sugar cane juice. Or, if you’re in the mood for something cooler, he recommends going to Jewel Changi Airport for dinner under the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, which he sometimes does.
“It’s simple, but that’s what makes it perfect. You leave the island feeling like your mind is being reset, refreshed, and ready to go again.”
It’s about discovering what makes Singapore what it is today. The mix of cultures, food, and languages that somehow blend perfectly is something that others envy. When asked where she would go on her day off, her answer surprised us a little.
“Just last week, I went to the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre with my family,” she says with a smile. “Though I’m not a Chinese, I find it fascinating for me and my family to understand how Chinese culture has evolved over time, and how the younger gen is preserving it from another perspective. That’s really uniquely Singapore.”
At the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, heritage doesn’t sit quietly behind glass. It’s alive. You’ll see how Chinese culture in Singapore still shapes the Singapore we know, making history more like an invitation to join the story.
Murni’s favourite part of the visit is the Singapo人: Discovering Chinese Singaporean Culture exhibition. It’s a feast for the senses. Think local delicacies, cultural events, and the different dialects, all seen in a new light. The best part? It’s nostalgic and fresh at the same time.
“These stories made us realise how our lives overlap, regardless of race, language, or religion. It makes us appreciate how connected we all are in this tiny red dot,” she says. Before leaving, they would head up to the rooftop garden for a quiet view of the skyline, a perfect pause between past and present, city and sky.
And no, she’s not done exploring. “I think next weekend we’ll check out the Indian Heritage Centre,” she says. “There’s just so much about Singapore I want to discover with my family, especially for my children to understand more about our rich culture.” Then she laughs and adds, “Or who knows, maybe we’ll follow Steven to Pulau Ubin one of these days. With the way he keeps talking about Pulau Ubin, just like the island’s unofficial ambassador, makes me want to bring my family there too.”
Curious, grounded, and full of heart, just like Murni herself.
Kai, being one of the youngest in the team, is always seen with a coffee in hand, wherever he goes. While he is always surrounded by dashboards and data week in week out, when asked about his favourite hangout place, he doesn’t hesitate. And that's when he put his expertise in place, spotting trends.
“Tiong Bahru, hands down. It’s chill, photogenic, a place full of character, and surprises, just like the data I analyse daily,” he laughs. Tiong Bahru isn’t just old. It’s cool without even trying. Here, vintage blocks sit alongside third-wave cafes and concept stores. It’s the kind of neighbourhood that makes you want to linger a little longer, just because you can.
He likes to stroll through the curved walkways, past those pastel walls, and see why Tiong Bahru feels lifted from the pages of a storybook. Built in the ’30s, the estate rocks that Streamline Moderne look. Rounded balconies, smooth lines, and all the soft edges you would want for a lazy afternoon wander.
“But here’s the secret sauce. It’s all in the mix. I would head to Tiong Bahru Market in the morning for my Chwee Kueh, Kopi C Siew Dai, the usual ones. Then, I would browse the concept stores, just like finding treasures, before heading to a cafe for lunch,” he says.
Call it people-watching, call it research. Either way, it’s one of the most memorable things to do in Tiong Bahru.
