There’s no question that Asia – with its enchanting cultural attractions, stunning natural beauty spots and myriad culinary delights – remains a hot pick for travellers. Planning on exploring the region? If you're an art lover or foodie, here’s why you should consider putting Phnom Penh (above), Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok at the top of your list.
As far as tourist destinations go, the Cambodian capital has largely flown under the radar compared with Siem Reap – the gateway to Angkor Wat – and nearby metropolises such as Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City. But that’s all set to change, thanks to a diverse slew of receny openings.
Opened in January 2021 and situated in a former garment factory, FT Gallery (above) is a minimalist space where you can view eye-catching pieces by artists with Khmer heritage. Another recently opened art venue is Chhan Dina Gallery. Founded by the eponymous local artist, its rotating monthly exhibitions spotlight works by Cambodian talents including painter and sculptor Chhim Sothy and visual artist Suos Sodavy.
Families can check out fun-filled recreational attractions such as Garden City Water Park and Coconut Park – both of which opened during the pandemic – while shopaholics can browse local and international labels at Chip Mong 271 Mega Mall, which opened its doors in late 2022. For a more boutique shopping experience, pop into concept store Shack Collective. You’ll find unique items such as handwoven scarves and cushion covers by Cambodian brand Fair Weave, locally made spirits from Samai Distillery and vivid prints by Phnom Penh-based Bassac Studio, to name a few.
Where to stay: Check yourself into Capri by Fraser, Phnom Penh, one of the city’s newest hotel residences, opened in 2023. You’ll discover spacious rooms decked out in vibrant furnishings, plus beautiful art by local creatives dotted throughout the property.
Kuala Lumpur’s multifaceted culinary scene has never been more exciting, with the Michelin Guide set to launch in the city in 2023. Modern Malaysian restaurant Dewakan, the sole Malaysian establishment on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 list, is a shoo-in to make the cut. Helmed by local chef Darren Teoh, the venue flawlessly executes gorgeous plates that showcase native produce, such as cured mackerel with ulam raja (King’s salad), pomelo and local flowers (above).
Other standout fine-dining restaurants that have put Kuala Lumpur on the global culinary map include Taka, where you can enjoy an Edomae-style omakase experience featuring fresh seafood flown in from Japan; Gooddam, where you can tuck into Italian classics with a creative twist; and Nadodi, which specialises in progressive South Asian fare. Think A5 Miyazaki beef with a vindaloo emulsion.
Of course, Kuala Lumpur has no shortage of more affordable eats that are equally delicious. Grab a meal at Village Park Restaurant, where you can sample arguably the city’s most famous nasi lemak (coconut rice served with various accompaniments) before exploring the trendy boutiques and cafés of Damansara Heights, located a short distance away. You can also amble along Petaling Street to feast on a wide array of street food – from tongue-tingling assam laksa (noodles in a tangy fish-based broth) and chicken rice to traditional desserts.
Where to stay: Situated in the hip Bukit Bintang neighbourhood, Capri by Fraser, Bukit Bintang is the ideal base for your Kuala Lumpur getaway. There’s The Den, for guests to get #SeriouslySocial at the on-site restaurant or at Drinx (above), the in-house bar; or work up a sweat at a gym or get business meetings done at The Pow Wow if you're on a workcation.
Besides its reputation as a foodie paradise (it’s especially known for its mouth-watering street food and unique cafes), Bangkok also has one of the most exciting bar scenes in Asia. Its cocktail spots regularly appear on best-of lists, with BKK Social Club placing 13th on the World’s 50 Best Bars 2023 roster and and Tropic City at number 6 on Asia's 50 Best Bars.
At the glitzy BKK Social Club, you’ll discover signature cocktails inspired by Argentina’s lively drinking culture. Try the Guarani (yerba mate, citrus, vanilla, soda and egg white) or, for something a little more potent, go for the Bananazo (bourbon, salted ripe banana, chocolate bitters and caviar). Meanwhile, Tropic City is a casual drinking den decked out in vibrant tropical motifs, and is perfect for those who adore rum-centric tipples.

If you’re up for a uniquely Thai experience, visit Tep Bar (above) in Chinatown. Tucked away in a narrow back alley, it’s a solid spot for happy hour before chowing down at the street-food stalls the district is famous for. You can sip on a tasting flight of ya dong (above, liquor infused with local herbs) and try a rice wine crafted from five different types of sticky rice – all while grazing on some crispy, deep-fried silkworms.
Where to stay: Modena by Fraser Bangkok is a calming oasis in the heart of the cacophonous city. Besides modern serviced apartments, it offers a 24-hour gym, an all-day bistro and a sleek bar shaking up delicious tipples.
