A LAND OF ASTOUNDING HISTORY
Located about an hour's drive from your hotel in Buriram, the Phamonrung Historical Park is arguably the top historical site in all Isan. The temple - initially built in homage to the Hindu god Shiva in the 10th century by the Khmer Empire - sits upon the rim of an extinct volcano overlooking a lush rural landscape. Follow the footsteps of ancient royalty along the processional walkway and across one of the complex's three naga bridges to the main temple and take in the spectacular views to the plains surrounding the park. Tours are inexpensive and families will enjoy taking the kids to learn more about the Angkor empire. Arrive at either sunset or sunrise for truly breathtaking views of the park's pagodas and ancient facades.
NIGHTTIME FEAST
Thailand's renowned cuisine takes on new dimensions in the northeast; if anything the spice factor increases markedly. Buriram's street food game is strong and no visit is complete without sampling some of the local flavours on offer. One of the best places to grab a nighttime feed is the Buriram Night Bazaar, a refreshingly authentic night market only an 11-minute drive from your hotel in Buriram. The market - also known as Buriram Walking Street - is more than a food destination; here you'll find all manner of stalls selling everything from fresh produce to clothing, souvenirs, jewellery and even the odd live music performance. The market is open almost every night and the food is so delicious and inexpensive it's hard to go wrong, however a few dishes and stalls stand out. A must-try is Pa Nok Luk Chin, a stall selling 'luk chin', otherwise known as meatballs. Served on skewers, it's common practice for diners to order from the stall and stand nearby to chow down perfectly cooked pork meatballs in a tangy tamarind sauce.
THE WORLD GAME IN BURIRAM
Buriram wears its reputation as a sports city proudly, and Chang Arena is the heart of much of Buriram's annual sporting fervour. The home ground of Buriram United F.C., the club has an illustrious history to suit its large and impressive stadium, having won the Thai Premier League no less than seven times in their history. The Thai people love their football and being in the bleachers for a match is an electric experience. Even better, your Buriram accommodation is located directly across the road from Chang Arena, ensuring you'll have plenty of time to relax before the big match.
THE HOME OF MOTOGP IN THAILAND
Buriram's other major sporting pastime is motorsports, and the premier venue in Thailand for those who feel the need for speed is the Chang (Buriram) International Circuit, located only a few kilometres east of your Buriram accommodation. The track hosts some notable annual events including the Asian Le Mans Series, the F3 Asian Championship and the Touring Car Series Asia; however it is best known as the location of the Thailand MotoGP, a fixture on the MotoGP's international racing calendar since 2018. Although the 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers have confirmed Buriram will be a fixture on the calendar until at least 2026. The MotoGP generally takes place in October each year, so don't forget to book your Buriram hotel ahead of time to avoid missing out.
BURIRAM'S NATURAL WONDERS
Feel like stretching your legs? Don a daypack and head six kilometres south of your Buriram hotel to Khao Kradong Forest Park. The park includes some beautiful walks, cultural sites and plenty of lush natural beauty just outside Buriram proper. One of the best walks is from the foot of the extinct Pak Plong volcano to its summit 265 metres above sea level - an energetic stair climb sure to work the legs. Take some time to catch your breath and marvel at the Suphattharabophit, a large golden buddha figure atop the peak. The view from the peak is breathtaking, overlooking Buriram and the plains below. On the full moon day of every 5th lunar month, the Khao Kradong Festival takes place on the peak and is a celebration of Thai-Khmer folk culture where you can experience live cultural performances, food stalls and artisans selling local products.
GETTING TO AND GETTING AROUND BURIRAM
Depending on where you are coming from, there are several ways to arrive at your hotel in Buriram. Both Nok Air and AirAsia fly to Buriram's small airport daily, and there are plans for future expansion of the airport's capacity in line with Buriram's increasing importance to the international motorsport scene. Trains run from Bangkok to Buriram daily, and the city is a main stop on the Northeastern line. Alternatively, guests can catch a bus from central Bangkok. Once in Buriram getting around is easy, with plenty of motorbike taxis or tuk-tuks.
