HISTORICAL CHENGDU
Chengdu's recorded history goes back over 3,000 years and throughout that time the city played a significant role in imperial China's rise. The best place to see giant pandas in their natural habitat is the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, located in Chengdu's northeast. Established in the late 80s, the centre started with a mere six pandas. Today, there are over 80 pandas at the facility as well as numerous other native species including lesser pandas, white storks and black-necked cranes. The centre is purpose-designed to cater for the breeding and care of the giant pandas and has been a resounding success.
TEA AND CULTURE

Take the metro from the Hi-Tech Zone station to Nijiaqiao station and walk the short distance along Nijiaqiao Rd to the Shengtianlu Tea House. FIERY FLAVOUR
Ask anyone in China where the hottest dishes come from and they'll tell you Sichuan. The region is famous for its fiery cuisine and the liberal use of the Sichuan pepper - the signature spice that gives Sichuan cuisine its unique flavour. Far from being a pepper similar to black pepper, the spice is actually a small citrus-like fruit. When added with chilli to dishes, it creates the numbing, spicy flavour known as málà. One of the best places to try Sichuan's signature spicy hotpot is Lao Ma Tou hotpot restaurant, only several stops north of your apartment in Chengdu. Walking into the restaurant, the smells of bubbling chilli oil and a rich, spicy aroma is an assault on the senses. Order the house hotpot and choose what you'd like to boil and cook in the spicy broth - be prepared for some heat!
BEAUTY IN THE MOUNTAINS
Some genuinely stunning natural wonders surround Chengdu, and one of the must-see destinations is the Jianmen Scenic Route and the Jianmen Pass. The pass is a few hours drive away from Chengdu but the journey is well worth the time it takes; you'll pass through some remarkable countryside. Along the way, marvel at wide-open wheat fields, steep mountains and deep tree-filled valleys. Arriving at the Jianmen Pass, you'll be greeted by sheer cliffs and peaks that rise sharply into the sky. The pass's ancient gate still stands sentinel over pathways that were once a strategic route into the region, contested over by varying factions throughout Sichuan's history.
GETTING TO AND GETTING AROUND CHENGDU
Chengdu is serviced by numerous transport options, including Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport and the soon to be opened Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, which is due to open in 2021. For the moment, most international flights arrive at Chengdu Shuangliu. From the airport, the quickest way to your serviced apartment is by taxi. Otherwise, take the airport shuttle bus to downtown Chengdu then catch the Chengdu metro from People's Park station to Hi-Tech Zone.
