The best events in Edinburgh throughout March 2020
There’s always a subtle shift in the city every March. As winter says it’s last goodbyes, it is usually the first time in the year where thermometers just about get to double digits.
Now while March in Edinburgh wouldn’t be right unless you’re wrapped up when out and about, there’s a lot to do indoors with some fantastic events on the calendar this month, from half marathons in the meadows to (hopefully) beating the French at Murrayfield.
Here are the top events taking place in Edinburgh throughout March 2020:
And here are our picks for the best events taking place this March in Edinburgh:
Six Nations Home Games – Scotland vs France
With there only being two home games in the calendar for this year’s Six Nations, our game against France is going to have an electric atmosphere at Murrayfield.
Last time Scotland met France in the tournament, they were beaten 27 – 10, so expect Scotland to enact revenge.
Jon Hopkins
Kick off the month with one of the most legendary names in electronic music. Jon Hopkins makes a stop at Usher Hall as part of his Polarity Tour.
It won’t be a full-on rave, and parts of the show see Jon performing at a grand piano, but it’s going to be a unique way to see his music live.
Meadows Marathon
Made a resolution of getting more exercise in and running in 2020? You can make sure you stick to it, even when you’re here in Edinburgh for a break, with a go at the Meadows Marathon. The Meadows is one of those areas locals love but not many tourists make the walk to go and check out. The marathon is split into different races with 5k, 10k, half marathon and full race options.
Registration starts at £15 for the 5k, and you can get full information from the website here.
Jake Bugg
A new album hasn’t been announced at the time of writing, but Jake Bugg is taking a mini UK tour in March to showcase new material. Expect him to play hits from his self-titled debut album as well as select cuts from Shangri La, One My One and Hearts That Strain.
Tickets cost £27.50, which includes booking fees.
Elvis Costello & The Imposters
In his first full UK tour in over a decade, Elvis Costello & The Imposters bring their Just Trust Tour to Usher Hall for one night only. Apparently the tour has this unique name as the band are asking you to trust that they’ll play a blinder of a set, even if your favourite isn’t on the setlist.
Tickets start at £55 and go up to £104.
Scottish Motorcycle Show
It’s time to rev up and head out to Islington for the biggest motorcycle show in the country. Some of the biggest names in motorbiking including Yamaha and Suzuki will be there, and there will be live demos by professional riders throughout the weekend.
Tickets can be purchased from the official website here.
Wee Dub Festival
Touted as one of the best reggae events in the UK, Wee Dub has grown from a small one-day event at Studio 24 to a three-day festival that takes over some of the most popular venues in Old Town. Expect towering sound systems and DJs aiming to blow the roof off every night.
Weekend passes start at £32.
Edinburgh Farmer’s Market
Get to see some of the best local produce and sample to your heart’s content at the Farmer’s Market. It’s a great attraction to visit if you’re up bright and early on a Saturday morning, where you’ll be able to try everything from Arran cheese to Kintyre smoked fish.
Alex Edelman: Just for Us
Coming to town right in the middle of an extensive UK tour, the American comedian who previously won Best Newcomer at the Fringe is back with a brand new show.
His last run during the fringe was a complete sell-out, so this is a great chance to see him live if you missed out last time.
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
An excellent idea for a Sunday afternoon treat, the orchestra will be performing one of Brahms’s most notable works. Tickets start at just £15.
Susan Boyle
Time flies by and Susan Boyle having a 10th-anniversary tour from her viral Britain’s Got Talent audition is solid proof. She’ll be performing all the songs she’s known for and has other BGT winner Jai McDowall as her support act.
The Slightly Annoying Elephant
Speaking of BGT, judge and writer David Walliams is bringing his beloved kid’s book to life with this adaptation.
If you haven’t read the book, get ready to see what happens when a young boy decides to adopt an elephant that’s shown up at their front door.
Scottish Opera: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
A fantastic take on the Shakespearean classic, literary and opera fans are getting the best of both worlds with this new production. It runs for five nights only in Edinburgh in March before a similar run in Glasgow at the end of April.
