      STAYING IN GUANGZHOU

The true jewel of the Pearl River Delta, Guangzhou is a city quite literally on the rise. Glittering skyscrapers soar above traditional temples along the banks of the Zhujiang (Pearl) River, and the streets bustle with the activity of millions of people going about their daily business. Often considered a megacity in its own right, Guangzhou is a vast thriving metropolis of around twenty-five million people. Visitors come to Guangzhou for work and play - the city is the epicentre of commerce, industry and innovation in southern China and many of the world's top companies have offices in Guangzhou.

When it comes to entertainment and culture, Guangzhou impresses with its colour and variety. Explore the narrow winding streets of old Canton, indulge in world-class shopping, and feast at a seemingly endless array of thronging restaurants, street-side eateries and cafes. Whether visiting Guangzhou for a short or an extended stay, don't miss out on seeing some of Guangzhou's top things to see and do including Shamian Island, the Canton Tower, Yuexiu Park and a night cruise along the Pearl River.

THE TOP THINGS TO DO IN GUANGZHOU

When staying in your Guangzhou serviced apartments, don't miss out on the very best Guangzhou has to offer.

      • Delight in the flavours of Cantonese cuisine, one of the great food traditions of China.
      • Explore old Canton's French and British colonial heritage on Shamian Island.
      • Embark on a cultural discovery of Guangzhou's best museums, temples and galleries.
      • Indulge in some retail therapy in some of Guangzhou's malls and boutique shopping streets.
      • Take a break from the urban bustle and spend some time under the trees in the Southern China Botanical Garden.

      THE HOME OF CANTONESE FOOD

Guangzhou is famous as the home of Cantonese cuisine, and the city is awash with venues where food-loving visitors can indulge in the fresh flavours of one of China's great food traditions. The Cantonese food most visitors would be familiar with are Canton's delightfully light dumplings, made from pork, shrimp and various vegetables; however the sheer variety of dishes in Cantonese food is mind-boggling. To experience Guangzhou's food culture at its best, take metro line 1 to Gongyuanqian station and enjoy a short walk to Beijing Road. The entire street is wall-to-wall restaurants offering up cuisine from all over China and a plethora of Cantonese establishments serving local delights. For an authentic Cantonese dining experience close to your serviced apartment, walk only a few blocks to Lian Xiang Lou Restaurant. Founded in 1889, the restaurant is considered somewhat of a national treasure and serves up some of the best Dim Sum and Lotus Seed Mooncakes you'll ever try.

      STEP BACK IN TIME

Located in Guangzhou's southwest, Shamian Island offers a glimpse into Guangzhou's colonial-era history. The Qing government gave both the French and the British concessions on the island in the 19th century. The area was originally a sandbank until both the French and the British dug an artificial channel to the north, turning the sandbank into an island. Today, the area features colonial-era architecture, cafes and quiet, tree-lined pedestrian boulevards. If time allows, wander a little north of Shamian Island to see one of Guangzhou's older residential neighbourhoods. In a city moving towards the future at a breakneck speed, traditional gated communities such as you'll see here are becoming a rarity. Stop by a tea stall for a steaming, fragrant cup of local tea, or poke about in some of the local stores and perhaps stop for a meal to soak up the quiet, peaceful pace of life. To get to Shamian Island from your serviced apartments, take metro line 1 or 6 to Huangsha station and exit from Exit F.

      A CULTURAL CENTRE

Guangzhou offers discerning culture vultures plenty to see and do, including museums, galleries and temples. Some of the city's top cultural sights are located only a short trip from your Guangzhou serviced apartments. Housed in a visually striking building, the Guangdong Museum boasts a vast collection of historical and cultural artefacts collected throughout the province and greater China. The museum's 160,000 pieces include permanent cultural exhibitions, calligraphy, textiles and an impressive and popular dinosaur exhibit.

Art lovers should take the time to wander the galleries of the Guangdong Museum of Art, the premier art venue in Guangzhou and indeed much of China. The museum houses both imperial-era and contemporary artworks from some of China's most revered artists. For a cultural experience the whole family will enjoy, pay a visit to the Chen Clan Academy - once the Chen clan's ancestral temple and now a folk art museum. The elaborately-decorated compound not only houses folk art from around China, visitors can also learn some time-honoured artistic techniques, including Chinese calligraphy.

      SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP

With over twenty-five million potential shoppers, quality shopping choices are abundant in Guangzhou. One of the city's premier retail destinations is the Taikoo Hui mall, located directly across the road from your Guangzhou serviced apartments. The glittering mall is home to over 180 brands from around the world, including flagship stores for some of the globe's premier fashion and technology labels and a wealth of dining options. For a different kind of shopping experience, wander through the crowded stalls of the Qingping Medicine Market. The vast bazaar-style market features over 1,200 stalls selling everything from fresh produce to spices, traditional Chinese medicines, street-side bites, teas and souvenirs.

      ESCAPE THE BUSTLE

Located to the northeast of Guangzhou, The Southern China Botanical Garden is a peaceful oasis removed from the endless frenetic pace of Guangzhou city life. The gardens and the attached scientific centre is one of the oldest botanical research institutions in China. The garden contains numerous sections open to visitors including Guangzhou's oldest village, a conservatory, and individual gardens designed according to groups of plant species. The site is worth a day trip on its own; take a picnic and relax by the shore of the garden's numerous small lakes, go for a bike ride or learn more about the plant species of southern China. To get to the botanic garden, take metro line 6 and alight at Botanic Garden station.

GETTING TO AND GETTING AROUND GUANGZHOU

Guangzhou is connected to the rest of China and the world by numerous public transport options, and the city's extensive metro network makes getting between different parts of the city and your serviced apartment relatively easy. International flights arriving in Guangzhou land at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. From the airport, take metro line 3 into the city and alight at Shipaiqiao station. Fraser Suites Guangzhou is directly outside metro exit A.
