Mitte means 'centre' in English, yet instead of a typical CBD with skyscrapers and gridlocked streets, Berlin's Mitte is a hive of cultural cool, all day (and night) dining, bars, clubs, boutique shopping and of course some of Berlin's top tourist attractions. One of our favourite pastimes in Mitte is heading to James-Simon-Park after a day spent sightseeing or in meetings and joining thousands of Berliners for a sundown drink on the lush lawns. The park looks across the Spree back to Museum Island and Berlin Palace and features small bars and after work eateries. People lounge about on deck chairs and pass the day's news. To get there from your Berlin accommodation, turn left up Breite Straße and walk straight until you come to Schloß and cross the River Spree. Cross the road and wander at the riverside walk to James-Simon-Park and mingle.

Berlin's nightlife is (in)famous. No matter the time of year, Germany's largest city offers plenty to see and do once the sun goes down. For live music, head to the Quasimodo Club on Kantstraße in Charlottenburg. The venue carries an enviable reputation for hosting some of Germany's and the world's top performers, including Dizzy Gillespie, since the 1960s. Looking for late-night eats? Why not try the cult favourite, Mustafas Gemüse Kebap. This small stand on the west side of Mehringdamm in Berlin Kreuzberg has lines stretching around the corner all day and night, but the service is fast and the food out of this world. Looking for more of a sit-down affair? Try Sardinian Italian restaurant Vino e Libri on Choriner Str in Mitte, just off Zionskirchstraße. The family-owned restaurant serves up flavourful and expertly prepared regional Italian dishes well into the night; often you'll see diners out at well past midnight.

SANSSOUCI PALACE AND SURROUNDS

Sanssouci Palace and surrounds is closely tied to the larger-than-life memory of Prussian king, Frederick the Great. As much at home with artists as with armies, Frederick the Great commissioned the palace as a summer escape where he could relax away from the intrigue and pomp of the royal court in Berlin. The name, 'Sanssouci ', is a play on words which in French means 'without concerns', and wandering the palace's extensive gardens, halls and terrace vineyard, it's easy - for royalty at least - to see why.

The easiest way to get from your serviced apartments in the Berlin CBD to Sanssouci Palace is to take the Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Potsdam from Hauptbahnhof Station. The train leaves every 30 minutes throughout the day, so there's no rush to beat the clock.
