Take a day trip from Leipzig
If you're looking to venture outside of Leipzig, there are plenty of great options for day trips as well. One of our favourites is Dresden, which is about an hour away by train. The city is absolutely stunning and there's plenty to keep kids entertained, from the Dresden Zoo to the Semperoper (an opera house) to the Green Vault, a treasure chamber in Dresden Castle.
If you're looking for something a bit closer to Leipzig, take a day trip to Halle an der Saale which is only about 30 minutes away by train. Halle is known for its beautiful historic centre and Marktplatz, as well as its excellent museums.
Eat out with the kids
There are also plenty of great restaurants in Leipzig that offer family-friendly menus. A few of our favourites include the Ratskeller Leipzig, a traditional German restaurant located in the cellar of Leipzig City Hall, and the India House, an Indian restaurant with excellent curries and naan breads.
Visit the Bach Musueum Leipzig
No trip to Leipzig would be complete without a visit to the Bach Museum Leipzig, which is dedicated to the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach. The museum is located in the historic Thomaskirche, where Bach himself served as music director for 27 years. The museum features interactive exhibits and displays of Bach's original manuscripts, as well as a multimedia theatre.
There are also plenty of other great museums in Leipzig for kids to explore, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the German Museum of Technology and the Natural History Museum.
Leipzig Town Hall
Leipzig's impressive Town Hall, which dates back to the 14th century, is also worth a visit. The building features an ornate Gothic facade and a towering tower that offers excellent views over the city.
