Remembering Kindness

Frasers Hospitality gives back to over 200 ‘Kindness Heroes’ worldwide

“Reading all the inspiring entries that have come through as part of our ‘Remembering Kindness’ campaign was extremely heartening and inspiring. In today’s tough climate, these stories serve as strong reminders that an act of kindness, whether big or small, can go a long way and have a positive impact on the people around us. We look forward to giving back to our ‘Kindness Heroes’ and providing them with a special experience with us. This is our way of thanking them for supporting others during these challenging times."

-  Mr Koh Teck Chuan, CEO,  Frasers Hospitality

Frasers Hospitality has concluded its ‘Remembering Kindness’ campaign, recognising over 200 individuals or ‘Fraser Kindness Heroes’ – including its own outstanding employees or ‘Everyday Heroes’ – with each granted with a complimentary stay at one of the global hospitality operator’s award-winning collection of serviced and hotel residences, and boutique hotels across the world. Launched in December 2020 as part of Frasers Hospitality’s #FraserCares initiatives, ‘Remembering Kindness’ is a global campaign that seeks to celebrate kindness by recognising and rewarding those who have gone beyond the call of duty to help others in need. Members of the public shared stories of individuals in their communities who have performed acts of kindness for the benefit of others. The campaign received entries spanning across 16 countries globally, ranging from Singapore, Australia, Japan, South Korea and China to the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom (UK).

In line with the celebration of kindness, Frasers Hospitality also marks its 23rd anniversary on Fraser Day this 31 March 2021 by honouring its outstanding employees across the world. These employees – or ‘Everyday Heroes’ – have not only contributed positively to their respective roles but have also displayed great acts of kindness and the willingness to go the extra mile to help fellow colleagues, guests, and the wider community.

Meet our Heroes here and read their inspiring stories of #RememberingKindness.

Jamal Elsheikh has defined his life by founding ‘One Love Australia’ which focuses on educating the children and youth about racism. After being stabbed as a 12-year-old child during a racially motivated attack and taking weeks to recover, Jamal decided not to focus on his anger, bitter revenge or the pain of his injuries but instead on the kind act of the stranger who had stepped in to try and stop the attack and who had ended up saving his life. He has devoted himself to prevent such attacks from happening to others in future by creating an information and education platform of awareness among children and youth about taking a stand against racism. Jamal was named a “kindness hero” by ABC Australia. According to his nominator, who prefers to remain anonymous, Jamal truly deserves the title of a “true kindness hero.”

When Fraser Suites Sukhumvit, Bangkok gained government approval to offer quarantine packages with a stay of 15 nights in 100 of its rooms, there was a need to procure 120 small tables to be placed outside each room that would cost about 2000 Baht each. Her colleagues at Malmaison Birmingham agree that Abi really stepped to be a hero when the hotel re-opened after lockdown in the UK. She had to quickly adapt from working as part of a kitchen team pre-pandemic to in some cases being a lone worker, albeit with a heavier workload. As she excelled in food production, her calm, steady nature provided confidence to the front of house teams during Covid restrictions.

She volunteered to go to Liverpool and covered Christmas week for them as they were so short-staffed with busy operations. She could have chosen to spend Christmas safely at home with her family as her own hotel had temporarily closed. The General Manager of Malmaison Liverpool cannot not praise her enough for going way above her role and helping so many of her colleagues.

As chief engineer at Fraser Place Central Seoul, Gilbert actively provided facility assistance in the face of constantly changing quarantine guidelines while also voluntarily reaching out to other departments. With reduced manpower, he willingly took over extra workload in carrying tasks usually meant for his staff, working from early morning till the night, weekdays and weekends.

When his team had to undergo two weeks of self-quarantine, including himself, he constantly communicated with the site engineer to ensure smooth facility management and operations, while checking up on team members’ welfare daily and keeping management updated. When he and his team returned to work from the quarantine period after testing negative for Coronavirus, the remaining staff members who had to work in their absence were stressed and exhausted. Gilbert went out of his way to make time, had lunch or dinner with each one and listen to their feelings and concerns to regain their motivation. He devoted himself to giving hope and positive energy to the whole hotel team, badly needed during a crisis.

He takes initiatives and positively inspires his colleagues in Fraser Place Central, Seoul. As a person who takes responsibility very seriously, Gilbert leads with loyalty, dedication and integrity; he is a hero to his colleagues.

In January 2020, as the outbreak began in China, Terry suspended his holiday and immediately returned to work at Modena by Fraser Changsha. For the first 72 hours back at work, he went without sleep as he led and cooperated with the team in government efforts to document and verify the travel trajectory of guests who had been to Wuhan. By February when the outbreak had spread to Changsha, he led the collaborative effort with public security authorities in containment.

Throughout this period, when it emerged that eight employees at Modena by Fraser Changsha had been in contact with guests who had travelled to Wuhan, these employees were then quarantined on-property. Because of him, the staff restaurant adopted a series of measures such as separate dining serving, purchase of packaged food, and unified recycling of tableware.
